Description

Each County of South Carolina has an elected Clerk of Court who serves a four-year term. The Clerk of Court serves the Circuit, Juvenile, and Family courts, and also as Register of Deed.

It is the duty of the Clerk of Court to provide administrative support, maintain court records and information of the judicial system for Common Pleas, Family Court, and General Sessions including criminal felony and misdemeanor cases, civil, family, and juvenile cases. Records include the filing of new civil cases, judgments, Lis Pendens, arbitration actions and attachments, coordinating motion hearings, jury and non-jury court proceedings, and court rosters for attorneys.

The Clerk of Court has jurisdiction in matters such as child support, alimony, domestic abuse, divorces, interstate custody case, URESA (Uniform Reciprocal Enforcement of Support Act), visitation, separate maintenance, custody, name change, annulment, paternity, equitable distribution, legal guardianship, support modification and termination of support, Family Court maintains case records and records associated with court actions.
