Williamsburg County Recycling & Landfill Information

Recycling Information

Williamsburg County was one of only four counties in South Carolina to meet two recycling goals set by the Solid Waste Management Division of the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control.

The first goal was to recycle at least 35 percent of the municipal solid waste stream generated in a county. According to the report, Williamsburg County is recycling 39 percent of its waste.

The other goal was to reduce the amount of municipal solid waste disposed of or incinerated to 3.5 pounds per person per day. The amount of waste put in the landfill per person per day in Williamsburg County is 3.04 pounds, according to the 2001 report.

"This is significant," said Williamsburg County Supervisor Richard Treme. "One of our major goals has been to reduce the amount of waste going to our landfill. This report shows that we are being successful in doing that."

One of the highest priorities in recent years in Williamsburg County has been the construction and development of 20 recycling sites to replace the old 'green boxes' as well as the establishment of a serious recycling effort.

County Council has been mindful that the county landfill is rapidly filling, and with significiant reduction in the deposit of solid waste, it should last until it is scheduled to close in 2008.

The county is also setting aside money each year to help meet the cost of closing the landfill and opening a new landfill which will meet the federal Subtitle D standards.

Hours for all sites are from 7 a.m. - 1 p.m., and 3-7 p.m., Monday through Friday. Sites are open on Saturday from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The sites collect Cans (aluminum, steel), plastic (#1, #2), paper (newspaper and inserts, white paper, cardboard), tires, used oil, filters and bottles, white goods, as well as scrap metal.

Additional sites for used oil collection are at Advance Auto, 1655 N. Longstreet and Santee Electric Co-op office, 1500 N. Longstreet in Kingstree.
