Functions

The Treasurer's Office collects real, personal, motor vehicle and other taxes and disburses to County government, municipalities, schools and special taxing districts in Williamsburg County. The Treasurer's Office also maintains records of revenues collected by other departments, invests any funds not immediately needed for disbursement and acts as paying agent for bonds for the County and School districts.

The Treasurer, an elected official, serves as the holding agent for funds of many County departments. These departments deposit funds received from grants, plat sales, fines and fees with the Treasure Office. The Treasurer invests all available funds to generate additional revenues for the County in the form of interest earnings.

Treasurer's Duties

The specific duties of the Treasurer are listed and described in Title 12, Chapter 45 of the South Carolina Code of Laws.

Personal Property Taxes

Owners must pay one (1) year in advance in order to obtain a vehicle license tag. The exception occurs when the dealer obtains vehicle license tag; taxes are then due and payable within one hundred twenty (120) days. The Treasurer's Office works with the SC Department of Transportation "online" for renewal of vehicle registration and decals.

Real property taxes are due and payable on or before January 15, without penalty. After January 15, 2005, 3% penalty is added. Beginning Feb 2, 2005 thur March 16, an additional 7% penalty is added. March 17, 2005 all unpaid taxes on real property, boats, motors, mobile homes and tax commission billings are put in execution to the delinquent Tax Collector’s Office. You may mail payment to us or visit our office to pay on site.

New E-payment Process

For the convenience of our taxpayers, we are now collecting tax online with credit or debit cards. A minimum convenience fee will be charged by the card processing company (see above link).
